Keep Your Office Healthy

It can be hard maintaining a healthy lifestyle while working. Here at The Wilson Group, we believe a healthy person leads to a healthy career. In order to help you kickstart your office health plan, we have provided these simple tips!

Start your day right

The course of your day is set right when you wake up in the morning. In order to lead a more productive and less stressful professional life, it is important to maintain a morning routine. Spending a few minutes in silence, whether through meditation, journaling, or drinking a cup of coffee, is key in releasing stress before the day starts. After doing this, eat a healthy breakfast (perhaps with a big cup of coffee) and you will be on your way to a healthier day at the office!

Pack light

Snacking at the office can be a challenging habit to break! With all of the treats that get brought in on a daily basis, it can be hard not to indulge. In order to steer clear of these temptations, pack a healthy snack before heading to the office. If you have a snack like carrots & hummus, or apples & peanut butter sitting by your desk, it will be easier to say no to the heavy snacking!

Get Up and Move

Most jobs require sitting a desk all day, and with that it can be hard to reach those 18,000 steps we’re prescribed each day. To help get closer to that goal, try setting a timer for each hour as a reminder to get up and take a walk around the office or down the block. Also, remember to try and schedule in time for exercise outside of the working hours. Just 10 minutes of exercise can increase productivity and lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle!

Self Improvement Month

This month is national Self Improvement Month, which means it is the perfect time to reevaluate your interview habits. Interviews can be an especially daunting part of the job hunting process. Here are some tips that will make your interview less nerve wracking!

Do Your Research

Research will help you look more prepared and interested in the opportunity. Start by researching general interview questions  that you are likely to be asked. Then research the company that has asked you to interview. Knowing information about the company shows you care about this job and the success of this company. This can also help you to gauge the company culture to decide what is best to wear to the interview. Knowing what is appropriate to wear can show that you are a good fit with the other employees. If you are still unsure as to what to wear to the interview, it might be worthwhile to call the office where your interview will take place. Go to sleep a little early so that you are well rested for the interview.

At The Interview

Go to your interview alone, do not take your children or any friends. Bring a copy of your resume to the interview and possibly a notepad in case you want to write down any follow up instruction. Get to the interview on time or 10 minutes early if possible. First thing to remember is to relax. You are prepared so make sure that you look confident, keep eye contact and remember to smile. Make positive and upbeat comments. Talk about what previous work experience you have that would relate to this position. Make sure that your phone is on silent and that you don’t check it during your interview. Never badmouth a previous boss or job, it looks unprofessional.

After the Interview

Make sure that you follow the follow up instructions. Check your email and phone for further information so that you can get back in a timely manner. Make sure to send a thank you note either written by hand or via email (handwritten is preferred most of the time). Thank them for their time and the opportunity they gave you to interview. If you had an obviously unsuccessful interview send a thank you note and ask for feedback on what you could have done better. For more tips like these or information about The Wilson Group, please visit our website or our Facebook.

Social Media Presence

As social media continues to rise in popularity, it is important to manage your profiles in a way that reflects professionalism and integrity. Here are a few tips to help clean up your online presence and take you one step closer to getting that dream job!

Keep it professional
It can be hard to set a boundary between one’s personal life and professional life when it comes to social media. However, there are a few steps you can take to make sure that even your personal life looks professional. One of these steps is choosing a profile picture that reflects your integrity and maturity. Instead of posting another selfie or picture of your cat, consider a picture where you are looking directly in the camera with a proper smile and an air of confidence. A strong profile picture will reflect a strong character when moving through the hiring process.

Think before you post
A key to managing social networking sites is always keeping your audience in mind. Posting on social media has become so second nature to us that one can easily post a status or comment without giving it a second thought. However, it is important to combat this passivity by thinking before you post. Is it something you would want you future boss to see? Does it reflect your positive qualities? You may consider saving your posts in a document and coming back to them later to make sure what you want to post is appropriate. Don’t let your first impression be one of a foolish Facebook post, instead give employers the chance to see a bright future in you through your online presence.

Check your spelling
Spelling and grammar are on of the greatest mistakes one could make in the job search process. Grammatical errors show a lack of thoroughness and care which can affect your future as a potential employee. It’s always a good idea compose all posts in a word document so that you can check for errors before posting. This step may take you more time than desired, but the results will be worth the effort!

Give the people what they want
It is important that you show each of your friends or followers that they matter on social media. If someone comments on one of your posts, respond quickly and respectfully. No matter what type of comment or who it comes from, address each as if it is coming from the President of the United States. When potential employers are researching your accounts, they will want to see that you value your followers. If you treat your followers with respect, it will show employers that you will treat clients and coworkers in the same way.

Au Natural
Although it may be tempting to promote yourself through social networking sites, this type of activity should be limited. It can come off as arrogant or fake which takes away from the genuineness of your profile. Don’t be afraid to be yourself by keeping your posts light and fun! Employers will appreciate the personality that comes with each post, as they will receive a clearer picture of who you are and if you are the right fit for their company.

Cover Your Cover Letter Bases

shutterstock_15942679A cover letter is a great tool to quickly introduce yourself to a potential employer and hint at what is to come with your resume. If not executed correctly, however, it could send your resume and your hopes of landing the job straight into the trash. Here are five tricks to craft a commendable cover letter and land that interview:

1. Make it Personal

Whenever possible, address your cover letter to an actual person. “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Mr/Mrs”  immediately distances you from whomever may be reading it, and it shows that you didn’t put much effort into company research. A quick look on Google, or your search engine of choice, and you can probably find the company’s head of HR. If not, go ahead and call or email the company and ask directly. This will demonstrate initiative and help you stand out amongst other applicants.

2. Understand it’s Function

The purpose of a cover letter is to catch the attention of the potential employer and get them to want to read your resume. Listing proficiencies or work history in your cover letter that can’t be followed up in your resume is a big no-no. Instead, introduce yourself and state the job listing your are interested in, list a few key skills and experiences that can be directly applied to the intended job, and imply a follow-up at a stated time. This will give the employer a teaser of what is to come with your resume, and (hopefully) an interview.

3. Open Strong

Begin the cover letter stating who you are, what position you are interested in, and a couple of skills you have that would benefit the employer greatly if they were to hire you. Specifically, incorporate the skills mentioned in the job listing. This shows your attention to detail and interest in the position, as well as your suitability for the job.

4. Highlight your Career

Following your opening paragraph, list three to four key accomplishments in bullet form, taken directly from your resume. These career highlights should also reflect the desired skills from the job listing, as mentioned previously. This will demonstrate to the employer why you are the best candidate for the job.

5. Promise a Follow-Up

Establishing a timeframe for when you will check back in on your candidacy is important, as it gives the employer a set time in which they can consider their options and contact you, if so desired. Following up on a job application can take you from being another resume in the stack to sitting in an interview, so be sure to set a reminder for yourself to do so.

How to Put Yourself Out There

In the job interview process, your resume can either help or hinder you. Strong and well organized resumes send a positive message to employers, while sloppy, disorganized, and ill-worded resumes can often halt your interview process before it even begins. Luckily enough, it is easy to build a award-winning resume by following these helpful tips.

Tailor your resume according to the job you are applying for. Regardless if you have been employed by a plethora of places, often times included every single past employment cant clutter your resume. Tailor what you include or don’t include to fit the business you are applying to. For example, if you are applying for a marketing position, include employment history in that field.

Organize, organize, organize. The first thing on your resume should be your name and contact information, followed next by your education. Skills and past employment should be next. Past employment should be listed in reverse chronological order, with most recent employment first. To finish your resume, include any experiences or extracurricular activities at the end.

Be concise! Extra verbose, elongated, and detail-filled sentences can often detract from the overall clarity and effectiveness of your resume due to their extraneous and distracting nature. (Wasn’t that sentence hard to read?) Instead of complete sentences, try uses bullet points. They are easier to read and draw the eye’s attention better than lengthy sentences.

Have someone review your resume. Often times, it is difficult to proofread your own work. Having a friend or family member read and edit your resume can be extremely beneficial, as they tend to catch overlooked mistakes.
